Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the Exodus of the ancient Hebrew people from Egypt, where they were held in slavery under the pharaoh. Celebrated over 7 days in Israel and 8 in the rest of the world, Passover is a spring festival that takes place between Nisan 14 and 21 on the Hebrew lunisolar calendar.

The main celebrations occur on the first night of Passover, the actual night of the Exodus, and on the seventh night, when the miracle of the parting of the Red Sea is said to have occurred, leaving them safe from Pharaoh's pursuit. In Israel, these two nights, along with the days before and after, are state holidays, and the days in between are short work days. It is also spring break for schools and vacation time for many Israelis. The name of the festival itself refers to the 10 plagues inflicted on the people of Egypt to persuade Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go. Because the Hebrew people followed Moses' instructions, the plagues passed over them. In their haste to leave the banks of the Nile and flee Pharaoh's army, it is said that the people of Israel did not have time to leaven their bread. Thus, Passover received its second name: the Feast of Unleavened Bread. It is strictly forbidden to consume all leavened bread (chametz) during this festival. The guidelines for Passover not only prohibit all leavened foods in favor of mazzot (unleavened flatbread), but also require that all food products consumed during the holiday contain not a single crumb of leavened products. Therefore, many products have to be “kosher for Passover,” including chocolates, dairy products, sweets, and others, since during their preparation they may come into contact with leavening agents. As limited as it may seem, cooks today prepare delicious dishes with Mazzot that are scrumptious treats and wonderful Passover gifts. Israeli restaurants and Jewish venues abroad develop special treats for the holiday with delicious traditional and fusion cuisine based on Mazzot. They use finely grated pieces of Mazzot and nuts to prepare cakes, cookies, and other items that normally require flour and yeast. But of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to just the If you want to greet your friends and are unsure what to choose as kosher for Passover gifts, fruits and flowers are the safest way to go. They are always kosher, healthy, and a beautiful message of spring.

Another Passover custom requires that the house also be thoroughly cleaned before the holiday. All kitchen utensils and pottery undergo a purification ritual. In fact, many families keep separate sets of plates, cutlery, and cooking utensils just for Passover, so a nice teacup or a new set of dishes are also excellent Passover gift ideas. The night before the holiday, a ritual search for leavened bread (bdikat chametz) is conducted to remove all traces. Interestingly, if no crumbs are found during the search, it is considered ineffective. To ensure the success of the ritual, a few crumbs (usually 10) are deliberately left behind to be discovered and burned the next morning with other leftover leavened bread. Passover remains one of the three major Jewish holidays, when the whole family and friends gather around the table for a traditional Passover meal, or Seder. Highly ritualized (even its name means order), the Pesach Seder retells the story of the Exodus at the elaborately laid table. This traditional meal lasts around four hours, and the ritual incorporates many ways to entertain young and old, from traditional songs to the customary search for afekoman (a half piece of Mazza hidden during the meal). Whoever finds it receives a special prize, so any family will appreciate gifting child-related items, such as kosher Passover candy or small toys. Passover is a time for family, a holiday that welcomes new beginnings and celebrates freedom. It is a time of new blossoming and exploration, of songs and discoveries. It is a good time to spend with loved ones.

Where is Passover celebrated?

Passover is celebrated wherever Jews observe the holiday, most commonly including Israel, the United States, France, Canada, Great Britain, and Russia; however, there are practicing Jews on every populated continent in the world, including Costa Rica.
